Ministry of 'Justice' proposals hark back to the Middle Ages.
From October, drivers who defend themselves against a motoring charge will have to pay the bulk of their costs, even if found not guilty 1. They will only be able to reclaim costs equivalent to the rate for legal aid, which is considerably lower than that applied by solicitors to private clients. So drivers who know they are innocent face the choice of pleading guilty and being punished for a crime they did not commit, or prove their innocence and be punished financially.

ABD spokesman Nigel Humphries comments,

“This is like the way witches were tried in the Middle Ages — throw them into a pond and, if they float, they are guilty and burned at the stake. If they drown they are innocent, but they're just as dead! This type of justice has no place in the 21st century.”

The new system is clearly designed to discourage drivers from seeking justice and is discriminatory against a large section of the population. Drivers are automatically assumed to be guilty, yet there have been many cases where drivers have been accused unjustly, especially for speeding. As Nigel Humphries remarks:

“Local authorities often fail in their duty to provide and maintain the signs legally required to show what speed limits apply, and some speed measuring devices used by the police have been shown capable of giving seriously inaccurate readings. It is quite wrong that drivers should be prevented from defending themselves in such cases.“

ABD Chairman Brian Gregory added:

“I find it ironic that whilst the government has done much to eliminate the evils of discrimination against many sections of society, it is itself the main protagonist in the discrimination against drivers.”

Obama Agrees with Hannan He Don’t Love the NHS

Mandelson and Brown are trying to play up Dan Hannan’s comment that “If the Americans came to me and said, ‘Would you recommend us taking up a system just like the British NHS?’, I think I would have to say ‘No.”

That whole line of attack has just fallen apart: President Obama has just told Americans he would not use Britain’s “socialised” system as a model.

He also told an audience in Montana that he would not implement a “big government solution”. Obama said that a government-run system was not being proposed, nor was he seeking a “socialised” system; “I’m not in favour of a British system”. Looks like he don’t love the NHS…

Have any of the people who "love" the NHS had to wait a year (sometimes more) for treatment? Have they ever been denied treatment through the "postcode-lottery"; after moving 20 miles to suddenly find their new health authority won't fund treatment agreed by their previous health authority? The NHS is undoubtedly "overly-bureaucratic" and it most definitely "rations care. Whilst many of the criticisms are unjustified, let's at least acknowledge its faults whilst standing up for its principles.

Interesting article by Peter Hitchens on Peter Mandelson in the Daily Mail today. Hitchens has obviously been influenced by the book "Peter Mandelson: And the Making of New Labour" by Donald Macintyre. Essentially, Mandelson, far from being the progressive centre-left NuLab moderniser he tries to present himself as, actually has a past which includes a serious amount of time participating in Communist activism, something many Labour MP's with a more traditional working class conservative (small 'c') outlook abhorred as unpatriotic and dangerous in the olden days.
